How to re-view a "view once" photo on WhatsApp
A view once photo or video on WhatsApp disappears as soon as you open it. On iPhone, "screen recording" can sometimes let you keep it. Here's how to do it, step by step — keeping in mind that you must "respect the sender's privacy".

Re-viewing a WhatsApp view once media, step by step
Open the conversation without touching the media

Spot the "view once" media without opening it yet. Open "WhatsApp" and the conversation with the "view once" media (a "1" icon in a bubble). "Don't open" the photo yet: set up screen recording first.
Start the screen recording

Start screen recording from the Control Center. Open the "Control Center" (swipe down from the top-right corner), tap the "Screen Recording" button (the circle), wait for the countdown, then go back to WhatsApp.
Open the media then stop recording

The media shows and the screen recording captures it. Tap the "view once" media: it shows while the screen is being recorded. Close it, then "stop the recording" (red bar at the top). The video is saved in "Photos": you'll be able to re-view the media there.
Good to know
Screen recording remains the simplest way to keep a "view once" media. Note: WhatsApp "sometimes blocks" this capture in recent versions (black screen in the recording). Above all, "respect the sender's privacy": never share private content without their consent.
Good to know
- WhatsApp "does not warn" the sender about a screen recording (unlike a regular screenshot, which can be blocked).
- On recent versions, the "view once" media may appear "black" in the recording: the protection worked.
- Recording someone else's content without consent can "raise legal and ethical issues": use with caution.
Frequently asked questions
- Does the sender know I recorded their view once media?
- No, WhatsApp doesn't send a notification for a screen recording. However, a regular screenshot is often blocked or flagged on view once media.
- Why does my recording show a black screen?
- Because your version of WhatsApp blocks the capture of view once media. It's a deliberate protection: in that case, the media can't be recovered with this method.
- Is it allowed to record a view once media?
- Technically it's possible, but view once mode exists to protect privacy. Keeping or sharing someone's content without their consent can be unethical, or even illegal.
